Question: How do I use one of the images as wallpaper on my Desktop?
Answer: On the Gallery page or the Tiled Image View page, right-click on the image. A menu will pop up. Depending on which browser you are using, the menu will be different. In Internet Explorer or Netscape set to display pages like Internet Explorer, click "Set as Background" from the menu. The image may or may not be tiled on your Desktop after this. If it is not, click here for further instructions.
In Firefox or Netscape set to display pages like Firefox, you'll need to click "Set as Desktop Background..." from the menu. You will then be shown another dialog allowing you to specify some options. On this dialog, select "Tile" from the "Position" drop-down menu at the top, then click the "Set Desktop Background" button at the bottom. (Top)
Question: I'm using Internet Explorer, and when I set one of the images as my Desktop background, the image is not tiled but is just shown in the center of the screen one time or is stretched over the entire screen. How can I change that?
Answer: Right-click anywhere on your Desktop except on one of your icons. From the menu that appears, click "Properties" at the bottom. In the dialog that appears, there is a row of tabs at the top. Click the second one that says "Desktop". Near the bottom on the right, there is a drop-down menu labeled "Position", pull this down and select "Tile". Click the "OK" button and the image will be tiled on your Desktop. (Top)
Question: Why is your site free? Is there a catch?
Answer: The cost of running the site is currently supported by advertising revenue and donations. There is no catch. The images are free to the public. However, if at some point in the future, income from advertising and donations is insufficient to sustain the site, we may switch to a subscription based service, but we don't foresee this happening as of now. Question: Why don't the images change colors and design like the one on your homepage?
Answer: That's just a nifty little Javascript slideshow to show a few different images and the fact they come in many different colors. Sorry, the actual images don't do that. (Top)
Question: How'd you make all those images?
Answer: All images were made using Corel's Paint Shop Pro X and a few different plug-ins. (Top)
Question: Why are all the images grey? They're supposed to be all different colors.
Answer: On each gallery page, there is a little color palette icon in the upper-right corner above the images and in the lower-right corner below the images. Clicking this icon opens a little window containing a color palette with 216 different colors in it. Clicking one of the colors causes all the images in the gallery to be "colorized" or tinted dynamically via a script running on our server with the color that you choose. The color palette is also shown on the Tiled Image View page so that when you are viewing a single image on that page, you can "colorize" it alone and see what it looks like tiled in that color as well. The images are all originally grey before they are colorized so that the new color doesn't blend with the original color causing unexpected results. (Top)
Question: When I click a color from the palette in the Gallery or the Tiled Image View page, the image(s) are close to the color I selected but not really that color. Why?
Answer: The images are colorized dynamically via a script running on our server. Colorization means "tinting" the image a certain color. Since the images are 3D in nature, they consist of many areas of different luminance (the amount of light hitting the various 3D "surfaces"), highlights, and shadows. Therefore the color will show up differently on these different areas, "tinting" each area with a shade of the color you chose. Also, if the images were saturated with too much of one color, it would make them lose alot of detail and quality. (Top)
Question: Why the name "DeskFlakes"?
Answer: Because they are like snowflakes, every one is different, but every one is beautiful in its own way. Plus, they look great on your Desktop, so...DeskFlakes seemed appropriate. (Top)
Question: How do I use one of the DeskFlakes images for wallpaper on my mobile phone?
Answer: First, browse through the gallery to find an image you would like to use for mobile wallpaper, then click the image. On the Tiled Image View page, click the link below the image that says "Use for mobile wallpaper". A new window will open allowing you to specify options for the format and image dimensions that your phone supports for wallpaper. You can get this information from your phone's documentaion or from your phone manufacturer's website.
Unfortunately, we do not provide a service to send the image directly to your phone so you'll have to save the image to your computer and get it to your phone another way. Mobilatory.com offers a great free software program and a free online service allowing you to upload files from your computer to your WAP enabled phone. You can also use a USB data cable that connects your phone to your computer and special software made for your phone to transfer files from your computer to your phone. Check your phone manufacturer's website for details about compatible software and availability of a data cable. USB data cables are also available on Ebay.(Top)
